On August 24, A.D. 79, the Roman city of Pompeii was buried by the catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius. The pumice and thick volcanic ash that ended the lives of so many also encased the city in a virtual time capsule for the next 17 centuries. The city remained largely lost and forgotten until rediscovered by archaeologists in the early 1700s, resulting in Pompeii today being one of the most complete and intact archaeological sites in the world.

‘This exhibition is an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see Roman treasures from almost 2000 years ago,’ said Dr Patrick Greene, CEO, Museum Victoria.

The exhibition will be developed by Museum Victoria in partnership with the Soprintendenza archeologica di Pompeii, and will feature over 250 objects from daily life in Pompeii and surrounds, as well as a number of body casts.

A Day in Pompeii will be on display at Melbourne Museum from 26 June to 11 October 2009.

The period from the mid 1790’s to about 1820 (which included all of Jane Austen’s adult life) seems to have been pretty much the only one between the middle ages and the 20th century when women’s clothing styles, in the predominantly Protestant and Catholic countries of Europe, were neither corseted or tightly-fitted from the waist up; nor hoop-skirted, crinolined, heavily full-skirted, or bustled below. Later (Victorian) authors such as Charlotte Brontë and Mrs. Gaskell sneered at the “scanty petticoats” of this period, but to our eyes these clothes generally seem much less burdensome (and much more like something somebody would actually wear in real life, instead of at a costume party) than the styles of the Victorian era.

Persuasion: Fashion in the Age of Jane Austen looks at the changes in fashion that occurred over Austen’s lifetime, with a focus on English women’s fashion during the first two decades of the nineteenth century. Drawing on work from the National Gallery of Victoria’s holdings of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century fashion, prints and drawings, decorative arts and paintings, and complemented by key works from other Australian institutions and private collections, Persuasion broadly surveys the years from the 1770s to around 1830, one of the most dynamic periods in fashion.

I remember this lady who emailed me from an Australian Navy vessel stationed in the Gulf; she wanted to get her husband a unique gift which symbolised their commitment to each other in picture form. (They had been married for a long time – a fifteenth wedding anniversary – I thought about it for a while and said to her…

“Sheryl listen, I really don’t know you well enough to be suggesting gifts like that for you and your husband…I don’t know what to say.”

Anyway, that’s the last I thought I’ve ever hear from Sheryl in the Gulf.

I admit sometimes I’m not the best sales person and should really just make up something! Why not? Because I really want our clients to think of something special. I know these amazing oil portraits will be with people for a long time….so I really make a point to the client to think of their own unique idea…Suddenly the phone rang – I could not believe who was on the other end…AND… IT WAS NOT SHERYL!!..

“Hello…..this is Mr J%^& (Last name has been omitted for Australian Navy security reasons). I was looking at your website and thought about getting a special painting done for my wife…”(I’ll cut a very long story short) you guessed it, the man on the other end was Sheryl’s husband…and it was their 16th wedding anniversary coming up…I could not believe it! Anyway…the gentleman was looking for an anniversary gift for his wife, who was away with the Navy..in the Gulf!

Hooray I said, “a double sale!!” (No, only joking)…I was actually dumfounded…

Anyway, he ended up getting their wedding anniversary photo painted into a fantastic oil painting portrait on canvas and Shery…well, she had a portrait commissioned for her husband, as a birthday gift...the amazing thing was we were able to have them done so they arrived on the same day…(ok, a couple of days apart...the Gulf can be a hard place to deliver to!) UPS are incredible!

The team will adjust the photo and digitally insert an appropriate background for you to see. We will send the image to you via email for your inspection.
