Just like the other leading impressionists of their time, Renoir studied at Charles Gleyre studio where he met other famous painters such as Monet, Sisley and Bazille.  With such illustrious company, how can he not produce amazing results?

Renoir was noted for his use of saturated colors along with vibrant light and his use of people as subject of his paintings.  He loved to capture candid and intimate situations.

One of his famous Impressionist works is the “Dance at Le Moulin de la Galette“ also known as “Bal Du Moulin de la Galette“.  He beautifully captured a scene where there was a crowd of people at a popular dance garden near his home in 1876.  This particular painting was sold for $78.1M in 1990.  It is one of the most expensive Renoir paintings ever sold posthumously.

Renoir broke from the Impressionist movement in the mid 1880s to focus on figure paintings.  The works of Raphael and those Renaissance masterpieces inspired him.  This is the period where his subject would primarily be on female nudity like the one he did in 1887 called “The Large Bathers” which the original can be found in Philadelphia Museum of Art and “After The Bath” which he painted in 1888.

Claude Monet (1840-1926) was a leading French Impressionist who studied in Charles Gleyre Paris studio where he met another famous painter, Pierre-Auguste Renoir along with Frderic Bazille and Alfred Sisley.  They all tried to develop new ways of painting and Monet has developed the approach of “plein-air” or “in the open air” landscape painting.

Monet was even considered the founder of French Impressionist painting. The word, Impressionism was coined from one of the titles of his early works, “Impression, Sunrise” by one of the leading art critics of their time, Louis Leroy.  It was meant to belittle their group and their works.  However, the artists led by Monet just took it and began using it to describe their art movement.

Monet said that, “Landscape is nothing but impression and an instantaneous one, hence this label that was given us.”

From all his works, the “Le basin aux nympheas”, a 1919 painting of Monet’s beloved water lilies which was done in series, proved to be his most valuable painting up to this date as it was sold for an outstanding amount of $80,451,178 in an auction conducted by Christie’s in New York.
