Contemporary art typically refers to any piece of artwork created in the present. Once art ages, it loses its contemporary status. Generally speaking, any art created from the 1960s to the present is considered to be contemporary art. Abstract art is any form of art that does not replicate an actual image found in nature. Rather, it uses shapes, lines and color in a non-descript way.
Contemporary Abstract art is considered to give a very modern feel to a home or office. Many companies prefer to use contemporary abstract art in their offices to give the impression of a hip, creative, updated, and stylish corporate image. That’s why you rarely see famous reproduction art of images like the Mona Lisa or other well known traditional paintings in corporate offices. Contemporary abstract art says to customers and clients that “we are with the changing times and on the cutting edge” instead of an old stodgy company still operating in the Stone Age.
When people look at contemporary abstract art, it tends to evoke an emotion in people, but they don’t know why. Sometimes people look for objects within an abstract painting, when there aren’t any. Some abstract artists do hide objects creatively in the painting as a symbol or metaphor for a concept the artist is trying to convey. And sometimes, the art is simply as it is, with no hidden meaning, no objects, or metaphors.
Contemporary abstract art is usually chosen for its colors and lines. People search for paintings that will compliment the existing décor. Or they look for pieces that will shock and draw attention.
When you are looking for contemporary abstract art, choose something that evokes an emotion in you that you want others to feel as well when they walk into your home or your office. While it’s still unclear how abstract paintings elicit emotion, the fact remains that every painting makes you feel something. And, always remember to go with your first gut reaction because this will likely be the same reaction others have, too.
Contemporary abstract art hung in your office or home should be a reflection of who you are and what you like to be surrounded with. Choose the colors that compliment those feelings. And determine whether the lines are soft and gentle or are deep and harsh. When you choose a piece of artwork that makes you feel strong and powerful at the office or relaxed and calm at home, you will be more at ease in that space. And, that will make others more at ease as well.
