A thick trunk rises from a small mound of earth and opens into large, drooping leaves with visible ribbing. A hanging flower spike with a cluster of small young bananas droops on the left, and a little sapling grows beside the base.

At lower right sits a decorative crest with a checked shield, a lion and a crown, above a flowing script dedication: "To His Grace the Duke of Chaulnes, President of the Royal Academy of Sciences at PARIS &c." Small captions in the top corners read "Plate 16" and "Page 184", and a tiny engraver's line runs along the bottom edge. The look is eighteenth-century scientific illustration.

Where it hangs

Suits a living room, hallway or home office where a quiet botanical study is wanted.
