He leans toward a bottle far larger than himself, which gives the scene its dry sense of humour.

The amber bottle stands on a plump red cushion against a flat black ground, framed by a narrow plum border. Its label shows a ruined church beside a white cross in a sunburst, with "CRUX" in the centre. Big yellow lettering reads "LIQUEUR" and "CRUX", with "JOSEPH GAUTIER & FILS - COGNAC" along the cream base.
