The body is shown from above, with segmented tail plates, a fanned tail and thin walking legs spread to both sides, all shaded with delicate hatching.

Behind it sits a faded French sea chart in deep indigo with brown tones. Place names read "Ocean Occidental", "Mer de Portugal", "France", "Alemagne", "Europe" and "Suede". Compass roses with radiating rhumb lines mark the left and lower right. A ship sits in a cartouche at top left, and a framed text panel reads "L'Ocean" with a second panel at top right headed "A Paris".

Where it hangs

Suits a beach house, dining room or home office, where the indigo ground works with white linen, driftwood and brass.
