Most of his famous landscapes are panoramas, and hung too small they lose the very distance they were painted to show.
Streeton worked thin and fast in the bright light, scrubbing dry grass and heat haze into the weave with a loaded brush. Hand-painted in oil, that looseness survives: you get the ridge where the horizon was dragged in, the flecks of warm cream standing off the canvas. A flat reproduction cannot do it. Stand a metre away from a painted version and the paddock genuinely recedes, which is the whole point of the picture.
Go wide. For a three-seater sofa, 150 to 180cm across earns its place; anything under a metre on a big wall looks like a postcard. About Streeton & our reproductions
The life
Sir Arthur Ernest Streeton was an Australian painter who specialised in landscapes and became a leading member of the Heidelberg School. Born at Mount Duneed near Geelong, he studied at the National Gallery of Victoria's art school and in 1888 took over the artists' camp at Eaglemont, where the golden pastoral views he painted — including Golden Summer, Eaglemont — made his name while he was still in his early twenties.
Through the 1890s Streeton worked on the Hawkesbury River and around Sydney Harbour, perfecting the high-keyed blue-and-gold palette that came to define how Australians picture their own country. He served as an official war artist in France in 1918, was knighted in 1937, and spent his final years painting at Olinda in the Dandenong Ranges.
