The life
Sir Arthur Ernest Streeton was an Australian painter who specialised in landscapes and became a leading member of the Heidelberg School. Born at Mount Duneed near Geelong, he studied at the National Gallery of Victoria's art school and in 1888 took over the artists' camp at Eaglemont, where the golden pastoral views he painted — including Golden Summer, Eaglemont — made his name while he was still in his early twenties.
Through the 1890s Streeton worked on the Hawkesbury River and around Sydney Harbour, perfecting the high-keyed blue-and-gold palette that came to define how Australians picture their own country. He served as an official war artist in France in 1918, was knighted in 1937, and spent his final years painting at Olinda in the Dandenong Ranges.
