Why Gauguin

Flat colour needs a warm wall and enough size to breathe

Gauguin built pictures from broad unmodulated fields, which means scale and wall colour matter more here than with most painters.

Gauguin rarely blends. He lays colour down in flat planes and holds them apart with a dark contour, so a reproduction lives or dies on the quality of those edges and the weight of the paint. Painted in oils by hand, the contour has a slight tremble and the fields carry real brush direction, which is exactly what a flat print cannot give you. Look at how the shadow greens sit against the skin tones.

Go bigger than you think. His figures are large in the frame, and below about 90cm wide a Tahitian group starts to look like a book plate. Hang on warm white, cream or a soft clay wall; cool grey-white turns his roses chalky and kills the ochres. Keep the frame simple, a plain timber or dark float. Avoid hanging one next to a busy patterned wallpaper, since both fight for the same flat decorative space.

About Gauguin & our reproductions

The life

Paul Gauguin spent part of his childhood in Lima with his Peruvian mother, travelled widely in the navy and on business, and prospered as a Paris stockbroker — before abandoning it all for painting. Sculpting and carving were his earliest artistic outlets, and in Brittany he forged a bold new style of flat, saturated colour and heavy outlines that broke decisively with Impressionism.

His quest for an earthly paradise began after viewing a Polynesian village display at the 1889 Paris Universal Exhibition. He sailed for Tahiti in 1891, painting the dreamlike island scenes that made his name, and eventually settled in the remote Marquesas — partly to escape government bureaucracy and missionary control on Tahiti — where he died at Atuona in 1903.
