The life
Paul Gauguin spent part of his childhood in Lima with his Peruvian mother, travelled widely in the navy and on business, and prospered as a Paris stockbroker — before abandoning it all for painting. Sculpting and carving were his earliest artistic outlets, and in Brittany he forged a bold new style of flat, saturated colour and heavy outlines that broke decisively with Impressionism.
His quest for an earthly paradise began after viewing a Polynesian village display at the 1889 Paris Universal Exhibition. He sailed for Tahiti in 1891, painting the dreamlike island scenes that made his name, and eventually settled in the remote Marquesas — partly to escape government bureaucracy and missionary control on Tahiti — where he died at Atuona in 1903.
