About Constable & our reproductions

The life

Constable based his paintings on sketches made outdoors, directly from nature — an approach that set him apart from contemporaries content to copy the old masters. He refused to imitate painters like Ruisdael and Claude, declaring it "would be dishonest to wear Claude's coat and call it mine," and developed an innovative technique of pure juxtaposed colours applied in rapid strokes to recreate the vibrancy of natural light.

Though the English Academy was slow to embrace him — election came only in 1829, after years of rejection — France celebrated his naturalism, awarding The Hay Wain a gold medal in 1824 and winning him devoted followers in Delacroix and Géricault. After settling in London following his 1816 marriage, he built ambitious large-scale works from detailed full-size sketches until his death in 1837.

Our reproductions
