About Matisse & our reproductions
The life
Trained under Gustave Moreau, Henri Matisse joined Derain, Vlaminck and Braque in forging Fauvism's vivid, unmixed colour between 1904 and 1907. A summer spent painting with Derain in Collioure gave him the blazing southern light that shaped his great interiors, odalisques and figure paintings. He famously said he wished his art to be like a comfortable armchair to relax in at the end of a busy day.
As an old man, Matisse underwent abdominal surgery that left him largely confined to bed and wheelchair — yet he entered another extraordinary phase of creativity with his simple coloured paper cut-outs. He died of cancer at Cimiez, above Nice, in 1954, celebrated as the twentieth century's great master of colour.
Our reproductions
Every Matisse reproduction at Direct Art Australia is 100% hand-painted in oils on artist canvas by professional artists — never a print. Our painters hand-mix his fearless, saturated colour and lay it down flat and singing, keeping every combination as bold as Matisse composed it. You approve photographs of your painting before it ships, and delivery is free Australia-wide.
