Why Malevich

Flat geometry only works when the wall around it is empty

These paintings are made of edges and voids, so anything competing nearby — pattern, clutter, a crowded shelf — kills them outright.

People assume a Suprematist canvas is easy to reproduce because the shapes are simple. It isn't. The whole character sits in the surface: Malevich laid his grounds unevenly, and the white is never one flat white. Painted by hand in oil, you get that variation — slight ridges, a brush direction you can read in raking light, edges that are decisive but not mechanical. A flat print of the same image looks dead by comparison.

Hang these dead level and check twice with a spirit level. The tilted shapes inside the composition make any error in the hang look like a mistake in the painting. Give each canvas at least 40cm of clear wall on either side. Go bigger than feels safe — 100 x 100cm or more for a main wall — because small geometric canvases read as graphic decoration rather than painting. Avoid patterned wallpaper entirely.
