About Malevich & our reproductions
The life
Kazimir Malevich believed art should serve no utilitarian purpose and that the artist required complete spiritual independence. Working through set and costume designs from 1913, he arrived at Suprematism — squares, crosses and rectangles floating in space to demonstrate "the supremacy of forms". His Black Square, exhibited in 1915, and the ghostly White on White anticipated Minimalism by half a century.
After the Revolution, Suprematism briefly flourished across Soviet art and design. But as Stalin's regime tightened its grip in the 1930s, Socialist Realism was imposed and abstraction suppressed; Malevich was marginalised and even arrested. He witnessed the extinguishing of the artistic freedom he had helped ignite, and died of cancer in Leningrad in 1935.
