Why hand-painted Van Gogh

Stand close to a Van Gogh in a gallery and you notice the surface is almost sculptural in places, ridges of paint sitting proud of the weave. That is what a hand-painted oil reproduction gets you and a printed panel never will. It also means light matters more than usual. A lamp or window off to one side rakes across the strokes and lifts them; a downlight directly above the canvas flattens everything into a picture of a painting.

Go bigger than feels safe. Most of these works are around 70 to 95cm on the long side in the original, and shrinking one to 40cm turns bold brushwork into mud. Ninety centimetres wide is a sensible floor for the night skies and wheatfields. Leave the canvas unglazed, since glass throws glare and kills the texture. And resist hanging two high-yellow pieces together on the same wall, as they cancel each other out. One warm, one cool.
