About Van Gogh & our reproductions
The life
Vincent worked as an art dealer’s assistant and tried life as a preacher before teaching himself to draw — he didn’t begin painting in earnest until his late twenties. What followed was barely a decade of work into which he poured more raw feeling than perhaps any artist before or since, confiding everything in his letters to his beloved brother Theo.
His troubled, erratic temperament cost him friendships and peace, yet his greatest paintings came in the final two years of his life — an astonishing seventy-six canvases in his last seventy days at Auvers-sur-Oise, where he died at just thirty-seven. He sold one painting in his lifetime; today The Starry Night and the sunflowers hang in every heart.
Our reproductions
Every Van Gogh reproduction at Direct Art Australia is 100% hand-painted in oils on artist canvas by professional artists — never a print. His thick impasto strokes are laid on generously with brush and knife, so the surface ridges and swirls like the originals. You approve photographs of your painting before it ships, and delivery is free Australia-wide.
