The life
Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec — printmaker, draughtsman, illustrator and painter — stands beside Van Gogh, Cézanne and Gauguin among the greatest artists of the Post-Impressionist period. Childhood fractures that never healed properly left him with an adult-sized torso on child-sized legs, barely five feet tall; shut out of his family's aristocratic pursuits, he turned his attention wholly to art.
In a career of barely twenty years he produced 737 canvases, 275 watercolours, 263 prints and posters and more than 5,000 drawings, recording the dancers and singers of Montmartre in a highly linear style — sympathetic yet dispassionate. An alcoholic for most of his adult life, he died at thirty-six from complications of alcoholism and syphilis; his mother and his dealer later established the museum in Albi that bears his name.
