Surrealist images need breathing room more than most other art

The impossible detail only reads as impossible when there is enough wall around it and enough canvas to see it.

The common mistake with surrealism is buying it too small. These images work by asking you to accept something odd as real, and that takes a second look. At 40 or 50 centimetres, a floating island or a fragmented face just reads as busy pattern from across the room. Go up a size from what feels safe. A single large canvas almost always beats three medium ones here, because the strangeness needs room to sit unchallenged.

Hang surrealist work on the plainest wall you have, with at least a hand's width of clear space either side of the furniture below. Avoid patterned wallpaper and busy gallery walls; the image is already doing the complicated part. Pop-collage pieces are high contrast, so they suit white, charcoal or concrete rooms. Softer dream landscapes sit better against warm neutrals and timber. Centre at eye level, roughly 145 centimetres to the middle, and leave the frame off if the colour is strong.
