The life
McCubbin trained and lived in Melbourne his entire life, and the city and its surrounds played a key role in his art, serving as the setting of many of his paintings. He began his formal training at the Artisan's School of Design in Carlton, and went on to study at the National Gallery of Victoria Art School under Eugene von Guérard and George Folingsby.
He formed close friendships with fellow artists Tom Roberts, Arthur Streeton and Charles Conder — collectively known as the Heidelberg School, after the rural district outside Melbourne where they often painted. In May 1916, The Art of Frederick McCubbin became one of the first significant art books published in Australia — evidence of the recognition his craft achieved within his own lifetime.
