McCubbin's palette is grey-green and ochre, which decides where it hangs

These are not bright paintings, and that is the whole point of choosing the right wall for one.

McCubbin worked in scrub light, not sunlight. The colour sits in a narrow band of olive, dusty grey, bark brown and pale ochre, with the drama carried by tone rather than hue. On a warm white or limewashed wall the painting glows. On a cool grey wall it can sink and go flat. Hang one where it gets indirect daylight for part of the day and the greens separate properly.

Go bigger than feels safe. The bush scenes rely on distance between the foreground trunks and the far clearing, and that space collapses below about 90cm wide. For a sofa, aim for two-thirds of the furniture width and hang the centre at eye level, roughly 145cm from the floor. Keep the frame simple; a plain oak or dark timber moulding suits the period, while ornate gilt fights the restrained palette.

About McCubbin & our reproductions

The life

McCubbin trained and lived in Melbourne his entire life, and the city and its surrounds played a key role in his art, serving as the setting of many of his paintings. He began his formal training at the Artisan's School of Design in Carlton, and went on to study at the National Gallery of Victoria Art School under Eugene von Guérard and George Folingsby.

He formed close friendships with fellow artists Tom Roberts, Arthur Streeton and Charles Conder — collectively known as the Heidelberg School, after the rural district outside Melbourne where they often painted. In May 1916, The Art of Frederick McCubbin became one of the first significant art books published in Australia — evidence of the recognition his craft achieved within his own lifetime.
