About Munch & our reproductions

The life

Edvard Munch was a Norwegian expressionist who lived a tumultuous life and poured it directly into his paintings. His early work was harshly rejected, but by the 1890s his critical reception had improved and crowds were flocking to his exhibitions. Living a nihilistic, bohemian existence of binge drinking and brawling, he transformed personal tragedy and psychological turmoil into symbolic art that expressed his innermost emotions.

By 1908 he stood on the brink of insanity and suffered hallucinations, but after a period of therapy he rebuilt his life financially and professionally. Munch spent his final two decades in relative isolation, painting prolifically at his estates outside Oslo, where he died in 1944.

Our reproductions

Every Munch reproduction at Direct Art Australia is 100% hand-painted in oils on artist canvas by professional artists — never a print. Our painters recreate his swirling, anxious strokes and acid colour with the same raw emotional charge that makes the originals so unforgettable. You approve photographs of your painting before it ships, and delivery is free Australia-wide.
