About Renoir & our reproductions

The life

Renoir began as a porcelain painter's apprentice, decorating fans in the style of Watteau, Fragonard and Boucher — and that immense skill and ability to convey charm remained entirely undiminished all his life. Uncompromisingly, he painted what pleased him: dances, luncheons, children and bathers, all bathed in the warm, feathered light that made him Impressionism's great painter of people.

By 1881, the year he turned forty and began travelling around Europe and North Africa, Renoir knew it was time for a reassessment. He decided that colour was to be the servant, not the master, and turned to firmer drawing and more carefully judged tonal form. Though crippled by arthritis in his later years, he painted on until his death of a heart attack at Cagnes-sur-Mer in 1919.
