About David & our reproductions

The life

Upon joining the revolutionary Convention, David voted for the execution of Louis XVI. After Robespierre's fall ended the Reign of Terror he was imprisoned but spared, thanks largely to the intervention of his royalist wife — and he soon found a new master in Napoleon Bonaparte, who made him a knight of the Legion of Honour.

David became the virtual art dictator of France for a generation — his influence spread to fashion, furniture design and interiors — and his studio trained painters as celebrated as Ingres. After Napoleon's fall he was exiled to Brussels in 1816, where he continued his teaching legacy and painted until his death in 1825.

Our reproductions

Every David reproduction at Direct Art Australia is 100% hand-painted in oils on artist canvas by professional artists — never a print. His marble-crisp drapery and polished Neoclassical finish demand slow, disciplined glazing — our artists take the time. You approve photographs of your painting before it ships, and delivery is free Australia-wide.
