Why David

The originals are enormous. The Oath of the Horatii is over three metres by four, and the figures in it are life-size. That scale is doing the work: the arms reach out at your own eye level. Shrink one of those scenes to 60 centimetres and it turns into a crowded diagram. If you want a small canvas, choose a portrait head or a single reclining figure instead, where the drama is in one face.
David's palette is narrower than people expect: stone greys, olive, ivory drapery, one red or one gold. That sits well on warm white, mushroom or a deep muted green, and badly on cool blue-grey, which turns the flesh tones sallow. Hang a large scene low, about 20 centimetres above a sofa back, so the standing figures line up with people in the room. Skip glass over oil, and give the canvas one directional light rather than a flat wash.

The life
Upon joining the revolutionary Convention, David voted for the execution of Louis XVI. After Robespierre's fall ended the Reign of Terror he was imprisoned but spared, thanks largely to the intervention of his royalist wife — and he soon found a new master in Napoleon Bonaparte, who made him a knight of the Legion of Honour.
David became the virtual art dictator of France for a generation — his influence spread to fashion, furniture design and interiors — and his studio trained painters as celebrated as Ingres. After Napoleon's fall he was exiled to Brussels in 1816, where he continued his teaching legacy and painted until his death in 1825.
