About Bouguereau & our reproductions
The life
Bouguereau was a French academic painter and staunch traditionalist whose realistic genre scenes and mythological subjects were modern interpretations of Classical themes, with a particular devotion to the human figure. His idealised yet almost photorealistic style made him a favourite of wealthy art patrons across Europe and America during his lifetime.
His reputation faded in the early twentieth century as Impressionism swept fashion aside, but the 1980s brought renewed scholarly interest in figurative painting — and a rediscovery of his extraordinary legacy. Across his long career he produced some 822 known paintings, though the whereabouts of many remain undocumented to this day.
