Still life was made for close walls, not big open rooms
The detail that makes these pictures worth owning — a bruised petal, light caught on glass — vanishes past about three metres.
Still life has always been close-range painting. It was hung in dining rooms and studies, at eye level, where people passed within a metre of it and could see the water beading on a petal or the light caught in a glass rim. A warm wall, a grouping, or a second piece nearby fixes it.
