Klimt's gold only works when the paint has real thickness

The gold period depends on texture catching light — flat reproduction kills it, which is why these are built up in oil by hand.

Most people meet Klimt as a poster and are surprised by the originals, which are heavily worked — the gold areas sit proud of the canvas in ridges and small tooled patterns. Hand-painted in oil, that relief comes back, and it is what makes the picture change as you walk past it. It also means Klimt rewards a wall that gets side light rather than flat downlight. Under cool white LEDs the ochres go grey and dull.

Watch the proportions. The Kiss and the Adele portrait are close to square, so forcing them into a wide frame crops the composition badly — give them a square or near-square canvas and plenty of clear wall. The friezes and landscapes are the opposite: long and low, and they sit well at around 60cm above a sofa. Klimt is already dense pattern, so hang him on plain walls. Patterned wallpaper and busy gallery walls fight him and both lose.

The life

A leading exponent of Art Nouveau and the anti-conservative Vienna Secession, Gustav Klimt frequently provoked scandal — Emperor Franz Joseph was even said to forbid his drivers from passing any building that showed Secessionist art. The objections centred on the erotic charge of his figures rather than his sumptuous decorative style, which made him the most sought-after portraitist of Vienna's grand families.

Far from Paris and its fashions, Klimt spent every summer at the Attersee, Austria's biggest lake, whose landscape he found endlessly inspiring and where he painted many of his luminous garden and lake scenes. His golden masterpieces, above all The Kiss, made him famous across Europe. He died in Vienna in 1918 of pneumonia following a stroke.
