About Klimt & our reproductions

The life

A leading exponent of Art Nouveau and the anti-conservative Vienna Secession, Gustav Klimt frequently provoked scandal — Emperor Franz Joseph was even said to forbid his drivers from passing any building that showed Secessionist art. The objections centred on the erotic charge of his figures rather than his sumptuous decorative style, which made him the most sought-after portraitist of Vienna's grand families.

Far from Paris and its fashions, Klimt spent every summer at the Attersee, Austria's biggest lake, whose landscape he found endlessly inspiring and where he painted many of his luminous garden and lake scenes. His golden masterpieces, above all The Kiss, made him famous across Europe. He died in Vienna in 1918 of pneumonia following a stroke.

Our reproductions

Every Klimt reproduction at Direct Art Australia is 100% hand-painted in oils on artist canvas by professional artists — never a print. Our painters build up his shimmering golds and intricate mosaic patterning layer by layer, so the canvas catches the light just as Klimt intended.
