Venice art · Giclee canvas prints

Canals, gondolas and fading light

Twenty-five Venice canvases: the Grand Canal at dusk, moored gondolas on green water, worn palazzo facades, bell towers against pink sky, and quiet side canals with laundry strung overhead. Painterly scenes and softer impressionist work sit side by side. Each one is made to order in the size and finish you choose, delivered free Australia-wide in 10 to 14 days.

Why Venice

Venice scenes are mostly water, and water is what sets the room's colour

Half of any Venice painting is reflection, so the canal tone ends up doing more decorating work than the buildings above it.

People choose a Venice print for the gondolas and then live with the water. Look at the bottom half before you buy. Some canals read green and silty, some go blue-grey, some turn amber under sunset light. That colour will bounce off your walls and sit next to your rug every day. A green-water canvas beside a cool grey sofa can look muddy; the same scene above warm timber looks settled.

Canal views are horizontal by nature, so give them width. Above a three-seater sofa, go 120cm or wider, hung so the centre sits about 145cm from the floor and the water line falls near eye level. Tall, narrow alley and bridge scenes suit the wall beside a door or the end of a hallway. Avoid hanging a busy Venice scene opposite a strong window, glare flattens the reflections that make it work.
