About Venice by Day
Two gondolas sit moored in the lower half of the picture, their black hulls trimmed with gold scrollwork and lined with crimson and magenta cushions and a patterned rug. Above them a tall wall washed in faded terracotta pink rises on the left, marked by small white-framed windows and an arched brick doorway near the waterline. To the right a cream stone facade carries arched windows, a stone balcony and a trailing green creeper spilling from an upper ledge. Pale timber mooring poles stand in the jade-green water.
The treatment is loose and watercolour-like, with soft bleeding edges, blotched pigment across the plaster and reflections broken into flecks of turquoise and cream on the canal surface. It reads as a warm, sunlit sketch of a quiet back canal rather than a sharp photograph.
Suits a living room or hallway with warm neutral or cream walls, and works in a bedroom above a bed head where the crimson and jade notes can pick up cushions or throws. Pairs with timber furniture, rattan, brass lamps and other European travel scenes. Good as a single portrait piece in a narrow wall space.
