Why this style

Thick knife-laid colour needs side light to do its job

These paintings are built from ridges of wet paint, and a wall with raking light will show every one of them.

Work in this manner is not about drawing. The flowers, figures and fields are suggested with a knife and a loaded brush, then left alone, so the surface carries as much of the picture as the subject does. Hung flat under a downlight, that surface disappears and the painting reads as a flat colour patch. Put it where daylight crosses the wall at an angle and the texture comes back.

Go bigger than feels safe. Loose colour work shrinks visually, and anything under about 60cm across tends to read as a smudge from the far side of a room. Aim for two-thirds the width of the sofa or sideboard below it, centre at eye level, and leave real breathing space either side. Avoid a busy patterned wall or a gallery wall of competing frames. One bold canvas on quiet paint wins every time.

Questions people ask

Is this a print or a real painting?

A real painting. Every piece is hand-painted in oils on canvas by a professional artist. Nothing here is printed, and nothing is a print with paint dabbed on top.

How close is it to the original?

Very. Our artists work from high-resolution references of the original and match composition, colour and brushwork. Because it is painted by hand, no two are identical, which is rather the point.

What sizes can I order?

Seven standard sizes, from 60 × 50cm up to 200 × 135cm, and custom sizes on request. Open the size guide on any painting to see each size to scale next to a sofa.

Framed or unframed?

Your choice at checkout: stretched and ready to hang, rolled in a tube, or framed in floating, classic or ornate frames. A floating frame adds a few centimetres each side; an ornate frame adds roughly 8 to 12cm.

How long does it take?

21 to 28 days, because it is painted to order. Delivery is free and tracked anywhere in Australia.

What if I don't love it?

Thirty-day money-back guarantee. Tell us within thirty days of delivery and we will make it right or refund you.

Annette Schmucker artworks

I live with my family in Aulendorf. Until the year 2000 I worked as a doctor. I have been enthusiastic about painting since my childhood.

As an autodidact I work out of the consciousness that I am not obligated to anyone. I do not have to go for an “individual handwriting” and do not paint in a certain direction. A strict “judge” about my pictures is only myself.

This large open space gives me a lot of room for ever new picture ideas.

I love diversity in painting and I am always concerned with completely different topics and techniques. Very often, I also work on many different techniques and images simultaneously. I do not want to follow a single set line. In the case of very diverse motives and techniques, an overarching commonality of my pictures is the imagery and the expression: My concern is to depict light, expanse and space. I work with concrete as well as abstract motives, and I like to combine both. At the moment I mainly deal with the topic of human beings and I connect the concrete representation with abstraction. The figures are integrated into abstracted spaces where you can find the theme of light and space.

The techniques I use are manifold: Because of their brilliance, the oil color plays a major role in most pictures. But the combination of oil paint with acrylic paint to new experimental techniques I appreciate, especially in the abstracted images. Almost all pictures are constructed in many translucent superimposed layers.
