Why Cézanne
Cézanne built form from patches of colour, so surface matters more than detail
His paintings resolve as you step back and come apart as you step in, which is the whole point of them.
Cézanne did not draw an apple and fill it in. He laid patches of colour side by side until the form arrived, so the surface of a good Cézanne is hundreds of small decisions in paint. That only survives in oil on canvas, where the ridges catch light and the shape firms up as you walk away from it. Up close it stays unresolved, and it was always meant to.
A still life holds its own at around 75 x 100 cm above a sideboard; go much smaller and the fruit stops reading as weight. Landscapes want width and roughly three metres of viewing distance. The palette runs to slate blue, olive, ochre and warm grey, so it sits easily with oak, rattan and lime-washed walls, and fights with cool grey-blue paint. Avoid a downlight directly overhead — raking light from the side shows the brushwork.

About Cézanne & our reproductions
The life
Paul Cézanne was a shy, irritable man who endured a discouraging start in the early 1860s — a forbidding father, examination failure and repeated Salon refusals. Encouraged by Pissarro, he worked largely in isolation in Provence, waiting more than thirty years for recognition, which finally arrived with his first one-man exhibition in 1895.
He sought "to make of Impressionism something solid and durable, like the art of the museums" — building his card players, bathers and endless studies of Mont Sainte-Victoire from patient, constructive planes of colour. He died of pneumonia in Aix in 1906, and within a decade Picasso and Matisse were calling him the father of them all, his work the bridge to Cubism and the avant-garde.
