The life
Paul Cézanne was a shy, irritable man who endured a discouraging start in the early 1860s — a forbidding father, examination failure and repeated Salon refusals. Encouraged by Pissarro, he worked largely in isolation in Provence, waiting more than thirty years for recognition, which finally arrived with his first one-man exhibition in 1895.
He sought "to make of Impressionism something solid and durable, like the art of the museums" — building his card players, bathers and endless studies of Mont Sainte-Victoire from patient, constructive planes of colour. He died of pneumonia in Aix in 1906, and within a decade Picasso and Matisse were calling him the father of them all, his work the bridge to Cubism and the avant-garde.
