Choosing well
Soft palettes need one dark note or they vanish across a room
Gentle colours photograph beautifully up close and disappear from six paces, which is where almost everyone actually stands.
Most art bought as a gift fails on the wall, not in the box. Before you buy, check the wall: its colour, how much light it gets after lunch, and what is already hanging nearby. A print that looks soft and pretty on screen can read washed out on a warm white wall in a north-facing room. Photograph the wall, then look at the artwork against that photo.
Over a bed or a dresser, aim for a canvas about two-thirds the width of the furniture, with the centre of the image around 145cm from the floor. Soft palettes need one dark note — a black hat, a deep stem, a shadowed ridge — or they dissolve from three metres away. Avoid pale florals on pale grey walls, and skip anything with script; you will tire of reading it.
