Why Turner
Turner's canvases are mostly sky, so they need size to breathe
Reduce a Turner too far and the atmosphere he spent months building collapses into a brown smudge.
Turner worked in thin glazes over scumbled light grounds, so the paint surface does half the work. In a small reproduction the haze flattens into mud and you lose the point of the picture. Hand-painted in oil at a decent size, those passages stay separate: you can see where the ground shows through, where the impasto catches on a wave crest, where a sail is a single dragged stroke.
Give a Turner at least 120cm across if it's a marine or landscape subject, and hang it a touch lower than you think, around 145cm to centre, so the horizon sits near eye level. Warm white, putty and mid grey walls suit them; cool blue-grey fights the amber. Don't crowd one into a gallery wall or light it with a hard downlight, which blows out the pale sky and kills the depth.

About Turner & our reproductions
The life
Turner's life was bound to London's Royal Academy: a full member by twenty-seven, he exhibited annually, served on its Council and hanging committee, and lectured on landscape painting for seventeen years. On varnishing days he became a legend, arriving with all the brightest pigments he could lay his hands on and reworking his canvases until they literally blazed with colour.
Working at the heart of the Romantic movement, Turner pushed his luminous landscapes far beyond the conventional academic style of his era — and the Impressionists followed his lead. Monet notably took Turner's example when painting Rouen Cathedral, having seen one of his gouache sketches in London.
