About Modigliani & our reproductions
The life
Amedeo Modigliani produced work so distinctive that people still wonder how, in Paris at the start of the twentieth century, he remained untouched by either Cubism or Fauvism. After befriending the sculptor Brancusi he settled in Montparnasse, showing his elongated stone heads at the 1912 Salon d'Automne before abandoning sculpture on health grounds two years later.
He turned instead to portraits and nudes — slender, mannered figures with oval heads, linear features and long, inclined necks that made his style instantly recognisable. Ravaged by illness and excess, he died in Paris in 1920 aged just thirty-five; his pregnant fiancée Jeanne Hébuterne took her own life days later, sealing one of art's most tragic love stories.
