About Monet & our reproductions

The life

Claude Monet is the central figure of Impressionism — a movement that had its seed in a chance encounter between a teenaged caricaturist and the landscape painter Eugène Boudin, at the shop of the only picture framer in Le Havre. Boudin coaxed the reluctant young Monet outdoors to paint, and from that moment his subject was fixed: not things, but the light falling on them.

His 1872 harbour study Impression, Sunrise gave the movement its name. From Argenteuil to London to Venice he pursued light obsessively — painting the same haystacks, poplars and cathedral façades again and again as the hours changed them — before settling at Giverny, where the water-lily pond he built became the monumental subject of his final decades.
