About Vermeer & our reproductions
The life
The Dutch school of the seventeenth century painted, in effect, a documentary of every aspect of daily life — and Vermeer was its quietest master. He specialised in interior scenes, most often a single room lit from the left by two windows, with a tiled floor and a map-hung wall, his subjects absorbed in their tasks with a calm, contemplative detachment.
To achieve his uncanny precision he experimented with a camera obscura, projecting the scene before him and painting it with meticulous patience. Home life was anything but still — he and his wife Catharina raised eleven children in Delft. He left barely three dozen paintings, and nearly every one, from Girl with a Pearl Earring to The Milkmaid, is a miracle of stillness.
