These are dark paintings with small lit passages, so the wall behind them and the light on them do half the work.
People often hang a Rembrandt on a cool grey or bright white wall and wonder why it looks like a hole. The originals sit in warm, dim rooms. Against a warm off-white, a clay tone or a soft olive, the browns open up and the lit skin tones start to glow. Hand-painted in oil, the highlights sit physically above the dark ground, so raking light from a lamp or window brings the impasto forward the way flat reproduction never can.
Scale matters more here than with most art. A self-portrait wants to be close to life size, roughly 60 to 90cm tall, hung at eye level where you can meet the gaze. The big group scenes need 120cm or wider and a viewing distance of three metres or more, or the composition collapses. Avoid downlights aimed straight at the canvas, which flatten the glazes. Warm side light, or a picture light on low, is far better. Dark timber or a plain gold-toned frame; skip anything ornate.

The life
Born the son of a Leiden miller in 1606, Rembrandt van Rijn moved to Amsterdam in his mid-twenties and quickly became the city's most sought-after portraitist. Group commissions such as The Anatomy Lesson of Dr Nicolaes Tulp and the monumental Night Watch made his name, while his marriage to Saskia van Uylenburgh brought him wealth, status and a grand house in the heart of the city.
Fortune later turned: Saskia died young, commissions slowed, and in 1656 Rembrandt was declared insolvent, his collections sold at auction. Yet his late works — The Return of the Prodigal Son, Syndics of the Drapers' Guild and an unflinching series of self-portraits — are his most profound, painted with thick, luminous strokes no artist has ever quite matched.
