Everyday scenes that make a room warm

Why hearth art

Home scenes belong where people sit, not where they walk past

Warm, domestic subjects are the easiest art to hang badly, because the details that make them work only show up close.

The mistake with home and hearth art is treating it as decoration rather than as something you will actually look at. These pictures reward proximity — the chipped enamel jug, the light on a tin roof, the brushwork in a sunset. Put them where people sit still: beside a reading chair, along a hallway you walk slowly, above the bed. Hung high over a stairwell, they lose every detail that made you buy them.

Above a sofa or sideboard, aim for a canvas roughly two-thirds the width of the furniture — 100 x 75cm over a three-seater, not 60 x 40cm. Ochre, dusty pink, sage and weathered timber tones sit well on white and greige walls and against oak or rattan. What fails is putting a cool grey-blue coastal piece on the same wall; the warm canvas suddenly reads as muddy beside it.
