Sport paintings with real motion in them

Why sport art

Sport paintings fail when they are hung too small for the room

Motion needs room to travel, and a games room is usually wider and darker than the wall you first imagined.

Most people buy sport art a size down from what the wall wants. Games rooms, rumpus rooms and home bars tend to have long uninterrupted walls and low, pooled light, which swallows anything under about a metre wide. Painted in oils, these pieces carry ridges of impasto in the dust, spray and crowd, and that texture only reads properly when the canvas is big enough to stand back from. Measure the wall before you choose.

Hang above a pool table or bar at roughly 150 to 160cm to the centre, or a touch higher if seating sits underneath. Keep at least 15cm clear of a cue rack or shelf. Racing and cycling scenes run hot in ochre, red and dust, so they sit well against dark green, charcoal or raw timber and fight with busy patterned wallpaper. Avoid hanging one directly beside framed jerseys or signed memorabilia; the two compete and neither wins.
