About Tom Roberts & our reproductions
The life
Thomas William "Tom" Roberts was a British-born Australian artist. After studying at art schools in Melbourne, he travelled to Europe in 1881 to further his training — including at the Royal Academy Schools in London — and returned home in 1885 equipped with the latest ideas in European painting.
Roberts championed painting en plein air and encouraged his fellow artists to capture the national life of Australia on canvas. He is best known for Shearing the Rams (1890), A break away! (1891) and Bailed Up (1895) — his great "national narratives" — and was also a renowned portraitist.
Our reproductions
Every Tom Roberts reproduction at Direct Art Australia is 100% hand-painted in oils on artist canvas by professional artists — never a print. That dusty, sun-drenched shearing-shed light is built up by hand, true to Roberts' plein-air Heidelberg palette.
