Why animal art
An animal print lives or dies on where its eyes are pointing
Direction of gaze does more work in an animal photograph than colour, frame or subject, and most people hang it without thinking about it.
Look at the animal before you choose the wall. If it is facing left, hang it so it looks into the room rather than off the edge of the wall, otherwise the whole picture feels like it is leaving. Same with a running horse or a bird in flight: leave the open space on the side it is heading toward. Get that right and a modest print feels considered. Get it wrong and a large one feels restless.
Animal photographs carry a lot of detail in the fur, feathers and eyes, so go bigger than feels safe. Above a three-seater sofa, 120cm wide is a starting point, not a stretch. Keep the centre around 145cm from the floor. Monochrome animal work sits easily with almost any palette; warm savannah and horse imagery fights cool grey-blue rooms, so pick one temperature and stay with it. Avoid a busy gallery wall of five species at once.
