About Sea Life in Pen V
A single murex shell sits centred on a plain white ground, rendered entirely in shades of indigo and cobalt. The left side of the shell is built from long ribbed folds that fan outward like pleats, each one outlined in dark ink and shaded with thin washes. The right side carries a rounded body whorl, pale at its centre where the white ground shows through, edged by a row of short pointed spines. A small numeral 5 with a full stop sits to the lower right.
Line and wash do all the work here: crisp pen outlines hold the shape while loose blue washes pool inside them, leaving visible edges where the pigment has dried. The effect is a natural history plate, quiet and precise rather than decorative.
Suits coastal and Hamptons rooms, white or pale grey walls, and bedrooms with blue and white linen. Works above a hall console, beside a bathroom mirror, or in a home office. Hang it with the other numbered shell studies in the series as a matched pair or a run of three. Browse more blue art, multi-coloured art, or read Art above the bed: what size and how high.
