About Manet & our reproductions

The life

Édouard Manet was a paradoxical combination: the revolutionary artist who craved official gold medals, the debonair man-about-town who used street slang, and the republican liberal who liked going home to the comfortable, conservative lifestyle to which he was accustomed.

His Le Déjeuner sur l'herbe and Olympia scandalised the Paris Salon in the 1860s, yet those very scandals made him the reluctant hero of the young Impressionists, who gathered around him at the Café Guerbois. He never exhibited with them, holding out for official recognition instead, and his last great painting, A Bar at the Folies-Bergère, was finished barely a year before his death in Paris in 1883.
