Why Pissarro
Pissarro's small strokes need distance, so scale the canvas up
Broken colour only resolves when you step back, and the usual mistake with Pissarro is buying a canvas too small.
Pissarro worked in short, separate strokes of unmixed colour. Stand half a metre away and a hayfield looks like grey-green rubble; step back three metres and it settles into light. That is worth knowing before you buy, because it decides both size and placement: these paintings need viewing distance, so they belong on the far wall of a living room rather than in a hallway you walk straight past.
For a main wall, start at 100 x 75 cm; smaller than that and the broken brushwork turns to noise. Hang the centre around 145 cm and keep it off a wall that takes hard afternoon sun, which flattens the greys. The palette is dusty, all sage, ochre, lilac and warm cream, so it sits well on off-white, limewash and oak, and struggles against cool blue-grey paint or busy wallpaper.

About Pissarro & our reproductions
The life
Known as the 'Father of Impressionism', Camille Pissarro painted rural and urban French life — particularly the landscapes in and around Pontoise and scenes from Montmartre — with an honesty and warmth entirely his own. Born at Charlotte Amalie on the island of St Thomas, he settled in Paris in 1855 and became the only artist to exhibit in all eight Impressionist exhibitions.
His mature work displays a deep empathy for peasants and labourers, and his generosity shaped the movement as much as his brush: he was a patient mentor to both Cézanne and Gauguin, who each called themselves his pupils. In his final years he painted his celebrated boulevard series from Paris hotel windows, and he died in the city in 1903.
