The life
Rubens combined phenomenal artistic gifts with equally remarkable organisational prowess, serving as court painter and ambassador for the Hapsburg rulers of the Spanish Netherlands. A Roman Catholic, multilingual diplomat and exponent of the lush Baroque style he had acquired in Italy — Caravaggio was a key influence, whose work he championed across Northern Europe — he moved with ease among the great courts of the continent.
His vast Antwerp studio allowed him to take on an extraordinary number of commissions, synthesising Flemish realism with the Classical techniques of the Italian Renaissance and the colour of Venetian masters like Titian and Veronese. He was uniquely honoured by both the English and Spanish monarchs — Philip IV's knighthood in 1631 a distinction no other painter achieved from these rulers.
