About Frida Kahlo & our reproductions
The life
Frida Kahlo was born in the Casa Azul in Coyoacán, Mexico City, survived polio as a child, and at eighteen was nearly killed in a bus accident that shattered her spine and pelvis. Painting from her bed with a mirror fixed above her, she made her own face and body her great subject, weaving Mexican folk art, symbolism and startling candour into some 55 self-portraits.
Her stormy marriage to the muralist Diego Rivera, her politics and her chronic pain all flowed into the work. André Breton claimed her for Surrealism, but she insisted she painted no dreams — only her own reality. She died in the Casa Azul in 1954, days after her forty-seventh birthday, and has since become a global icon of art and resilience.
