About Wake Me Up Coffee I
A single teal-blue cup sits at the centre of a square white field, filled to the brim with caramel-brown coffee topped by a pale rosetta leaf of foam. The cup rests on a round saucer washed in soft greys and silver-white, drawn with loose watercolour edges rather than hard outlines. A ridged, golden madeleine biscuit leans against the base of the cup at the lower left, and a slim silver teaspoon lies across the saucer on the right, its handle running off toward the edge.
The paper-white background is left completely empty, so the shadows beneath the saucer and the streaky blue pigment on the cup carry all the depth. Watercolour granulation is visible in the teal glaze and in the grey of the saucer, with the signature Danhui Nai printed in small letters at the lower right. The character of the piece is quiet and everyday: one cup of coffee, observed closely and left to sit in plenty of white space.
Made for kitchens, breakfast nooks and dining walls, and just as good above a coffee machine or in a cafe. The white ground suits pale timber, white shaker cabinetry and subway tile, while the teal picks up blue ceramics, enamelware and linen. Hang it as a square pair with a second coffee study.
