About Crossing the Bridge
The canvas is filled with a warm ground of ochre, sand and apricot, scumbled in diagonal strokes so pale cream light seems to drift from the upper left. Low in the right half sits a raised spiral, coiled like the scroll of a violin, with a soft shadow inside the curl and a stem that drops to the lower edge in dusty pink and black. Beside it stands a narrow pointed blade shape, ridged and outlined in shadow. At the left, a set of short parallel scratches leans across the surface like rungs.
There is no landscape or figure here, only carved-looking marks on a sunlit wall. The mood is quiet and weathered, closer to plaster relief than painting.
Works in rooms with warm timber, linen and rattan: a bedroom above a low bedhead, a hallway console, or a dining wall with cane chairs. The ochre and apricot ground sits well against off-white, clay or limewashed paint, and pairs with terracotta pots, brass lamps and undyed textiles.
