About Crystal Lake
Two small white rowboats sit side by side in the lower centre of the canvas, roped to a pale timber jetty that juts in from the bottom right corner. Their hulls are built from thick slabs of white and cream laid on with a knife, edged with a line of cobalt along the gunwale. Behind them the lake spreads flat and quiet in mint green, blue-grey and mauve, broken by a soft white reflection. A dark wooded bank runs across the upper third, with olive and yellow-green foliage under a hazy sky.
The handling is loose and heavily loaded, so the boats and jetty planks catch light as real ridges of paint while the water stays smooth and cool. It reads as a still, overcast morning with no wind and nobody about.
Suits a study, home office or reading nook where the cool greens and greys settle the room. Works above a desk, a sideboard or a bed head, and pairs well with oak or pale timber furniture, linen upholstery and white or soft grey walls. Good company for other water and landscape scenes.
