About Golden Buddha Five
A single Buddha head fills almost the whole canvas, seen straight on with the eyes lowered and closed. The hair is built from rows of small raised beads that catch the light along the crown, topped by a rounded knot at the upper edge. The face is broad and smooth, with a long straight nose, full lips holding a faint smile, and one elongated ear running down the left side. Colour stays within a narrow gold to ochre range, warmer at the cheeks and browner in the background.
The background is thickly worked plaster-like paint, scratched and scraped so it reads as an aged stone or gilded wall behind the figure. Light appears to fall from the upper left, brightening the forehead, nose bridge and right cheek while the neck and shoulder sink into deeper bronze shadow. The overall effect is a carved relief rather than a flat picture, calm and still, with the texture doing most of the work.
Suits a quiet bedroom wall, a hallway end, a yoga or meditation corner, or a bathroom with timber and stone finishes. The gold tones sit well against off-white, clay, charcoal or warm grey walls, and pair with rattan, linen, brass lamps and dark timber furniture. Warm lamplight or a picture light brings out the raised beadwork. Browse more religious art, gold art, all hand-painted oil paintings.
