About Dancer in Umber and Rust
A single dancing figure stands at the centre of the canvas, drawn in thin dark lines over a panel of deep olive-brown. Her head tilts back, one arm lifts behind her, and a fan of fine radiating strokes sits at her hip. The long skirt is built from thick white and pale grey paint, scraped on with a blade so the ridges catch the light. Around her the canvas is divided into rectangles of cream, pale blue-grey, rust red and charcoal, stacked like a wall of flat tiles.
A second dark panel sits upper right, almost black, with a row of short white dashes stepping across it like a staircase. The surrounding cream blocks are laid on flatly with visible knife edges and small gaps that show layers beneath. The painting is quiet and structural, with the dancer's white skirt as the one bright, heavily built passage against the earthy geometry.
Suits a living room or hallway with timber floors, leather or linen furniture and warm white walls. The rust and umber blocks work well beside tan leather, woven baskets and brass lamps. In a bedroom it sits comfortably above a low bedhead, and the portrait shape fits narrow wall spaces between windows or doors. Browse more people and figures, earthy tones, multi-coloured art.
