About Koi in Swirling Waters
Seven koi swim across a wide, near-white pond, seen from directly above. Each fish is built from short loaded strokes of teal, cobalt, crimson and orange, with pale gold flanks catching the light along the belly and head. Tails and pectoral fins trail in thin, feathered marks that break into the water. The carp face different directions, some nosing left, others curving toward the lower right corner, so the eye travels back and forth along the length of the canvas.
The water is worked in white and soft grey with looping incised swirls that suggest slow currents and ripple shadows. A small dark signature sits in the lower left. The painting's character comes from that contrast: a quiet, almost blank pale field interrupted by seven bursts of hot, saturated colour.
The long horizontal shape suits a wall above a sideboard, a bedhead or a hallway run. The pale water reads as near-white, so it sits easily on white, grey or pale timber walls, and the red and teal fish pick up rugs, cushions or ceramics in those tones.
