About Boats on the White Shore
Three dark timber boats sit side by side on a broad expanse of pale, wet sand that fills the lower half of the canvas. Their hulls are painted in charcoal and warm brown, with small upright marks along the gunwales suggesting oars, posts and rigging, and thin lines running from bow to stern. Behind them a narrow band of turquoise water deepens to strong cobalt at the horizon, where four small white sails are spaced unevenly. Above, a high grey-white cloud bank breaks to a thin strip of pale blue sky.
The sand is worked with a palette knife and loaded brush, leaving ridges, scrapes and shallow ripple marks that catch the light, while the sky is blended smooth and the sea laid in flat, even bands. The overall effect is quiet and open, with the three small boats holding the eye against a wide, almost empty shore.
Suits a coastal or Hamptons-style living room, a white or pale grey bedroom wall, and beach-house hallways. The turquoise band lifts rooms with linen sofas, rattan, timber floors and pale bedding, and it works well above a low sideboard or a bedhead where the wide sand area has room to breathe.
