About Harbour Masts at Dawn
A band of small structures runs straight across the centre of a wide canvas, read as a harbour seen from a distance. Thin vertical lines rise from it like masts, some drawn with a fine brush, others scratched back through wet paint. Between them sit flat rectangles in teal, grey-brown and soft ochre, stacked and overlapped like jetties, sheds and hulls. Above, a pale blue sky meets a horizon of thick white and grey paint, dragged sideways with a blade so the ridges catch the light.
Below the harbour line the paint thins into smooth washes of pale blue and white, with drips and faint verticals falling downward as reflections. The contrast between the heavy, built-up middle band and the quiet, almost empty top and bottom gives the picture its stillness. It is a calm, cool painting: restrained in colour, with just enough texture and teal to hold the eye at the centre.
Suits a long wall above a sofa, a sideboard in a hallway, or the head of a bed. The cool blues sit well with pale timber, linen upholstery, white or grey walls and brushed nickel fittings.
