About Midnight Ballerina
A single ballerina arches back on pointe against a near-black ground. Her arms sweep up and across, head tilted to the ceiling, the back leg extended in a long diagonal to the lower edge of the canvas. The bodice and limbs are painted in cool greys and white, with sharp highlights along the collarbone, ribs and thigh. The tutu is the brightest area: thick white and pale grey strokes layered outward in short, fanning marks so the skirt reads as stiff tulle. Satin pointe shoes with ribbons finish the bottom of the composition.
Around the figure the black background is broken by flecks and smears of copper orange, dropped in loose dabs at the left edge, beside the tutu and near the shoes. The effect is theatrical and quiet at once: most of the canvas is dark, so the eye goes straight to the lit skirt and the stretched line of the body.
Works in a bedroom above a bed head, in a hallway, or in a dance or music room where the dark ground can sit against a pale wall. Pairs with black timber furniture, brass or copper lamps, charcoal linen and white bedding. Good beside a piano or in a tall stairwell that suits a vertical shape. My wife already had a couple of pieces of custom ordered paintings she had collected throughout the last few years and with your large selection to choose from she found the perfect complimentary piece to finish off her room.
