About Dressage in Shadow
A dark horse's head fills the canvas at an angle, seen from the near side as it flexes at the poll. The bridle is painted in detail: cheekpiece, noseband, browband studs and two sets of reins running out to the left edge. At the centre a double bridle's bit rings and curb chain are picked out in bright silver, the strongest light in the picture. The neck and shoulder dissolve into soft grey and off-white washes, while the head and mane stay in deep black.
There is no background, no rider and no ground line, only tonal darkness. The effect is quiet and concentrated, a study of a schooling horse held in the moment before it moves forward.
Suits a hallway, dining room or bedroom where the wall is pale and the light is low. It works over dark timber, leather chairs and grey linen, and sits well beside other black and white pieces or equestrian photographs. Good for a country house entry or a stable-side office.
